To list or not to list — that’s the question that many deliberate. When you’ve lived in your home for a number of years, feel a part of the community and shopping at local stores has become second nature to you, it’s easy to convince yourself that you’re right where you’re meant to be. Some circumstances, however — such as a growing family or a lot of unused space — may just point to the need for a new house.

1. Unused Rooms

When your children have grown up and they’ve moved out of the house, it’s easy for the space they once occupied to turn into unused rooms. At this point in your life, you may be feeling like you have one too many floors to vacuum or too many rooms to dust. If you’re ready to downsize to a home that’s less maintenance, this might just be your sign.

2. The Need For Something New

When you’ve lived in the same home for almost a decade, it’s easy to out-grow your space. Maybe the decor has gotten old, or the interiors are in need of a refresh, and you’d rather buy new than put more money into your home. There’s an excitement that comes with purchasing a new home, and choosing the features and finishes that will complement how you like to live. Maybe it’s time to relive that feeling.

3. An Expanding Family

There’s nothing wrong with living in a smaller home, but when you have a growing family on the way, it becomes more difficult to simply make room. Whether you’ve just started discussing your family plans or you’re welcoming a new addition to your family soon, it may be time to consider moving to a larger home.

4. New Employment Opportunities

There’s tons of people scouring the market and looking for new jobs right now, and maybe you’re one of them. You could have been headhunted and offered a position, but it’s out of town. Why pass up a great employment opportunity just because of where you live? If you’re comfortable making the move, now’s your chance to pack up your things and set out on a new adventure.

5. Parents Moving In

Over the course of our lives, our parents have cared for us and provided a roof over our heads. There comes a time when roles reverse and it’s our parents that need to be taken care of instead. Perhaps you’re avoiding having to put them in a nursing home, or they’ve offered to lend an extra hand by babysitting the kids. Whatever the reason, if they’re moving in, you may need a spare room.

6. The Desire to Move Closer to Family

Moving closer to family has its perks — more quality time spent with each other, a helpful hand when you need it, watching the little ones of the family grow up, and never missing a birthday or celebratory occasion. It also means less time in the car or on public transit, which let’s face it, no one enjoys. If you’ve considered making the move, whether it’s closer to your parents, siblings or kids, now’s the time.
