April 11, 2023, Niagara Falls Review: Opened last summer, Welland’s one-of-a-kind Empire Sportsplex has won a Parks and Recreation Ontario award. The multi-court sports facility at 11 Shaw St. won the award in the park or facility design category for public use, showcasing uniqueness, innovation and creativity for recreation, said a city release.
Rob Axiak, director of community services, said Empire Sportsplex is a one-of-a-kind facility in Canada, and Welland is proud to have it.
The facility has six dedicated pickleball courts, three tennis courts with line overlay for six more pickleball courts, five beach volleyball courts, a full-size basketball court and two half-size basketball courts for 3-on-3 play.
